The canton of Obwalden recorded 69 foundations at the end of 2022. The high proportion of church foundations, which account for around a quarter of all foundations in the canton, is striking.
Obwalden: High Concentration of Church Foundations
According to the Swiss Foundation Report, the canton of Obwalden recorded 69 foundations at the end of 2022. In terms of foundation density, the half-canton lives up to its designation as the center of Switzerland – with 17,9 foundations per 10’000 inhabitants, it is roughly in the middle of the pack in Switzerland. Together with Nidwalden, there are thus over 150 foundations in the Unterwalden region – a considerable number for the original canton.
In 2022, two foundations were newly established in Obwalden and none were liquidated. This corresponds to a growth of 2,9%. In Switzerland as a whole, the number of foundations is also rising; in 2022, there were 123 more foundations than in the previous year.
